Yellow is one of three Labrador colors, not a separate breed. The shade runs from pale cream to fox red and comes from a recessive gene that hides black and brown pigment. Underneath is the classic Lab: a sturdy sporting dog with a dense double coat, an otter tail and a strong urge to carry things, developed from Newfoundland water dogs as a gun dog.
Most are friendly, food-motivated and eager to take part, which suits active households that enjoy training and outdoor play. They need daily exercise, steady guidance through a long, bouncy adolescence and measured portions, because the breed gains weight easily. Light coats hide dirt better than black ones but still shed heavily, and pale noses can fade in winter or burn in strong sun. Dogs vary, so a Lab's age and energy matter more than color.
