The Manx comes from the Isle of Man, where a natural mutation produced cats with short or missing tails. For centuries these cats worked as hunters on farms and ships. Tail length varies from none to full, but the build is consistent: round and solid, with a short back, hind legs longer than the front and a thick double coat. Most weigh 8 to 12 pounds and mature slowly.
Many Manx are gentle and devoted, calm for long stretches and playful in bursts, and some fetch like a dog. The dense coat copes easily with Tacoma's cool, damp weather, though the cat belongs indoors. The tailless gene can cause Manx syndrome, usually apparent in kittenhood, so a veterinary exam soon after adoption is worthwhile.
