The Turkish Van is a large, semi-longhaired cat with a white body and color on the head and tail, a pattern named after the breed. Its single, cashmere-soft coat has no undercoat and sheds water, and many Vans enjoy splashing in a sink or tub. They mature slowly, often taking three to five years to reach full size, and adults commonly weigh between 7 and 20 pounds.
The coat is easy to keep up with weekly combing, and the cat's energy is the bigger commitment. Vans tend to be clever, chatty and attached to their people, though many prefer sitting beside you to being held. Each cat's own personality counts for more than the breed description, so notice how a cat plays and reacts to handling.
