The Chartreux is a French breed that grew from blue-gray cats mentioned in writing as far back as the sixteenth century. It nearly disappeared after World War I and was rebuilt in the 1920s from natural colonies of blue cats. Every Chartreux is blue, with a dense, woolly, water-resistant coat, gold to copper eyes and a sturdy, muscular body on fairly short legs.
Many Chartreux are calm, gentle and quietly devoted, often following a favorite person from room to room. Most weigh 7 to 14 pounds and mature slowly. In Sioux Falls, the thick coat sheds heavily with the seasons, so weekly brushing helps, and measured meals and daily play keep weight in check through the long indoor winters.
