The American Bobtail traces back to the late 1960s and Yodie, a short-tailed brown tabby found in Arizona; the breed grew from bobtailed cats across North America. The tail is usually a third to half of normal length, thanks to a dominant gene unrelated to the Manx or Japanese Bobtail. Coats come short or medium-long in nearly any color, and weekly brushing keeps moderate shedding manageable.
Bobtails are medium, muscular cats, roughly 7 to 16 pounds, and they mature slowly over two to three years, so a young adult may still be goofy and growing. Many are sociable, clever and dog-like, fetching toys and following people from room to room. In a Columbus rental, that means plenty of interaction, vertical space and puzzle feeders. A short tail can occasionally come with spine or hip concerns, so a veterinarian visit after adoption is worthwhile.
