The American Curl began with Shulamith, a longhaired black stray found in Lakewood, California, in 1981. The curl comes from a dominant gene, so her kittens passed it on, and the breed earned championship status in the 1990s. Curls are medium cats of roughly 5 to 10 pounds, in longhaired or shorthaired coats and every color and pattern.
Many Curls stay kittenish for years, curious and eager to be involved. Their silky coats need only light combing, which is handy in a dry, dusty climate. The ears are firm at the base, so they should be handled gently and never bent. Because the breed is uncommon, adopters in Vegas may also meet curl-eared mixes, and each cat's personality matters more than the label.
