Every American Curl traces back to Shulamith, a stray female with backward-curling ears who turned up in Lakewood, California, in 1981. The curl comes from a single dominant gene, and the ear cartilage is firm at the base, so the ears should never be bent or unrolled. Curls are medium-sized, usually 5 to 10 pounds, in longhaired and shorthaired coats of every color.
Most Curls are playful, curious and people-oriented, and they stay kittenish for years. That suits an Albuquerque household where someone is home often enough to play. Coat care is light, with a comb a few times a month for longhairs. Curls are fairly uncommon, so adopters may also meet curl-eared mixes with similar personalities.
