The Egyptian Mau is a medium, muscular cat, usually 7 to 14 pounds, and the only naturally spotted domestic breed. Spotted cats like it appear in ancient Egyptian art, but the modern breed dates to the 1950s, when Princess Nathalie Troubetskoy brought three Maus from Italy to the United States. Silver, bronze and smoke coats, a scarab-like M on the forehead and gooseberry green eyes make it easy to recognize.
Many Maus bond closely with their people and stay cautious with strangers. They're active climbers who love interactive play, and their voices are usually soft and chirpy. The short coat sheds little, so weekly combing is plenty. In Atlanta, that adds up to a cat that does best indoors, with plenty of vertical space and a household that includes it in everything.
