Bengals have a sleek, muscular build and a spotted, rosetted or marbled coat, often with a glittery sheen. The breed began in the United States in the 1960s with crosses between domestic cats and the Asian leopard cat, but today's pet Bengals are many generations removed from that ancestor and are fully domestic. Most weigh 8 to 15 pounds.
Bengals are intelligent, curious and athletic, and many fetch, learn tricks or walk on a harness. They can be vocal and demanding when bored. The short coat sheds lightly and needs only weekly brushing, though Bengals aren't hypoallergenic. In a Tampa home they do best with tall cat trees, window perches and daily interactive play. Each Bengal differs in energy and temperament.
