The Egyptian Mau is a medium, muscular cat with a spotted coat, green eyes and long hind legs that give it a fast, springy stride. The modern breed took shape in the 1950s, and it is the only naturally spotted domestic breed. Most Maus weigh 7 to 14 pounds, and the short coat sheds little and needs only weekly combing.
In a Denver home, the bigger question is energy and temperament. Many Maus bond hard with one or two people, stay reserved with guests, and need daily play and places to climb. Their soft chirps are usually quiet enough for shared walls. Because the breed is uncommon, cats labeled Mau can be spotted domestic shorthairs, so judge each cat by behavior and comfort level.
