The Manx comes from the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, where a natural mutation spread through the island's cats and produced one of the oldest recognized breeds. It's best known for a missing or short tail, though tail length varies and some Manx have full tails. The body is round and solid, with a short back, hind legs longer than the front, and a thick double coat in many colors.
Manx are usually gentle and devoted, and they often communicate with soft trills rather than loud meows. They mature slowly, and most adults weigh 8 to 12 pounds. The gene that shortens the tail can also cause spinal, bowel and bladder problems called Manx syndrome, usually visible in kittenhood, so a veterinary exam soon after adoption matters. Cats vary within any breed, so judge each Manx by how it behaves.
