The Chartreux is a French breed with a dense, woolly, water-resistant blue coat, gold to copper eyes and a sturdy, muscular body on fairly short legs. Its tapered muzzle gives it a gentle, smiling look. Blue-gray cats appear in French writing from the sixteenth century, and the breed was rebuilt in the 1920s after nearly disappearing.
Many Chartreux are calm, loyal and quiet, often following a favorite person from room to room and speaking in soft chirps. In an LA home, that means a low-key companion who enjoys window perches and short bursts of wand play. Expect seasonal shedding, slow maturity and a cat that gains weight easily without play and measured meals.
