Canadian Hairless is the early name for the cat now known as the Sphynx. The line began in Toronto in 1966, when a domestic shorthair gave birth to a hairless kitten named Prune, and hairless kittens found in Minnesota in the 1970s widened the gene pool. The name sounds Egyptian, but this is a Canadian cat with a natural mutation, suede-soft wrinkled skin, large ears and lemon-shaped eyes.
Many of these cats are outgoing, playful and devoted to their people, following them from room to room in search of a warm lap. Life without fur brings chores: oily skin needs regular baths, ears collect wax, and the cat needs warmth, sun protection and an indoor home. LA's mild climate makes that routine easier to manage.
