Nearly every Burmese in America traces back to Wong Mau, a walnut-brown cat brought from Southeast Asia to San Francisco in 1930. The breed is compact and muscular, heavier than it looks, with a short, glossy coat and large gold eyes. Sable brown is the classic color, but champagne, blue and platinum also appear, and shelter cats are often mixes that share only some Burmese traits.
Burmese are known for being people-focused and playful well into adulthood. Many follow their family from room to room and greet visitors at the door. In LA, where many households are busy and live in apartments, that sociability works best with someone home often or a compatible second pet. Their short coat sheds little, which keeps care simple, though adopters should know about inherited conditions such as diabetes.
