The American Wirehair began with a single red-and-white kitten born on a farm in Verona, New York, in 1966. His crimped, springy coat came from a spontaneous genetic mutation, and cats descended from him were crossed with American Shorthairs to establish the breed. It remains one of the rarest pedigreed cats, though Shorthair-type cats of every kind turn up in shelters.
Wirehairs are medium to large, muscular cats, usually 8 to 15 pounds, with a dense, coarse coat and sometimes curly whiskers. Many are mellow, affectionate and playful without demanding constant attention, which can suit LA apartments and busy households. The coat needs only gentle care. Like any cat, each Wirehair has its own personality, so spend time with a cat before deciding.
