Birmans are colorpointed, semi-longhaired cats instantly recognized by their pure white paws, known as gloves in front and laces where the white runs up the back of the hind legs. The modern breed was developed in France after cats arrived from Burma around 1919, and the romantic tale of sacred temple cats is legend rather than documented history. Points come in seal, blue, chocolate, lilac and several newer colors, always with deep blue eyes.
Many Birmans are gentle, sociable cats with soft voices who like to stay close to their people without being demanding. Their silky coat lacks a heavy undercoat, so it mats less than many longhaired breeds, though weekly combing still helps. They usually take about three years to mature fully. Adopters who want a mellow, affectionate indoor companion often find them an easy fit.
