The Sphynx began in Toronto in 1966, when a hairless kitten turned up in an ordinary litter. The look comes from a natural recessive mutation, not anything Egyptian. Most Sphynx aren't truly bare: a fine peach fuzz gives the warm skin a suede-like feel. Big ears, lemon-shaped eyes and a round belly make them easy to spot.
Many Sphynx are outgoing, clownish and devoted to their people, and they hunt out laps and blankets for warmth. Skin oil builds up without fur, so regular baths, ear cleaning and nail trims are part of the routine. They live indoors, away from cold and sun, which suits Fresno's hot, dry summers and foggy winters. They aren't hypoallergenic, and each cat's personality differs.
