The Abyssinian is a medium-sized, lithe, muscular cat, usually 6 to 12 pounds, with a short ticked coat in which each hair carries several bands of color. Large cupped ears and almond eyes give it a wild look. Despite the name, genetic research points to ancestors along the Indian Ocean coast and Southeast Asia, and the breed was developed in Britain.
Abys are busy, curious and people-focused, though many aren't lap cats. They prefer to play, climb and supervise whatever you're doing. In Phoenix that energy stays indoors, so plan for tall perches, daily play and a cool home. The short coat needs little care, but the breed can inherit conditions such as pyruvate kinase deficiency and retinal degeneration, which a veterinarian can help you understand.
