Shih Tzus were palace dogs, developed in China from Tibetan stock and kept as companions by Ming and Qing royalty. The name means "lion," a nod to the lion of Buddhist art. Today's Shih Tzu is a sturdy toy dog, usually 9 to 16 pounds, with a short square muzzle, large dark eyes and a long double coat in nearly any color.
Most are affectionate and outgoing, happiest close to their people, though every dog differs. The coat sheds little but mats quickly, so brushing every day or two, or a short trim every four to six weeks, is part of the deal. In Parkersburg, a Shih Tzu mostly needs company, a cool spot indoors and a regular grooming routine.
