Border Collies come from the hills along the Anglo-Scottish border, where shepherds wanted a dog that could gather sheep with speed, focus and very little instruction. They're medium-sized and agile, usually 30 to 55 pounds, with rough or smooth double coats that are most often black and white but come in many colors.
Many are quick learners and bond closely with their people, but that intelligence needs a job. Without daily exercise and mental challenges, a Border Collie may invent its own work, like herding children or chasing cars. In Lewisburg, that means building training, trail time and puzzle games into the week. Dogs vary, and some are calmer than others.
