The American Bully was developed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, mostly from the American Pit Bull Terrier with American Staffordshire Terrier and bulldog breeds added. The aim was a heavily muscled companion with a calmer, people-focused nature. Size varieties run from compact Pockets to tall XLs, and the short coat comes in nearly any color.
In Charleston, that build matters. Valley summers turn humid, and heavier or short-muzzled Bullies tire quickly, so walks work best early or late. Many are affectionate and eager to please, but their strength means leash manners and slow introductions to other dogs are worth practicing. Bullies vary, so a dog's history and training tell you more than its looks.
