The American Hairless Terrier is the only hairless breed developed in the United States. It began in 1972 in Louisiana, when a hairless puppy named Josephine was born into a litter of coated Rat Terriers, and the AKC recognized the breed in 2016. The breed comes in a hairless variety and a coated variety with a short, smooth coat.
Most weigh 12 to 28 pounds and stand 12 to 16 inches tall. They tend to be curious, alert and playful, with a terrier's love of chasing and digging. In Milwaukee, the big care question is weather: hairless dogs need sun protection in summer and warm layers through a long winter, while coated dogs need far less of both. Every dog varies, so a dog's own energy and comfort matter more than breed averages.
