Australian Cattle Dogs were developed in nineteenth-century Australia to move cattle over long distances, and they still carry that work ethic. Medium-sized at roughly 35 to 50 pounds, a Heeler has a short, weatherproof double coat in blue or red speckle that handles Tacoma's drizzle better than many breeds.
Heelers are sharp and independent, and they get bored fast. In Tacoma they do best with owners who can offer trail time, training games and a steady routine, whether that's laps at Swan Creek or puzzle feeders on a wet weeknight. Because they're quick to chase moving things, leash manners matter on busy sidewalks and waterfront paths. Each dog's drive and sensitivity differ, so judge the dog in front of you.
