The Bedlington Terrier comes from the mining country around Bedlington in Northumberland, England, where it hunted vermin and rabbits. Its pear-shaped head, woolly topknot and arched back give it a lamb-like look, but the body underneath is lithe and fast, with Whippet ancestry likely behind its speed. Adults usually weigh 17 to 23 pounds.
Most Bedlingtons are gentle and affectionate at home, calm indoors and playful outside, with terrier grit when something catches their attention. The crisp, curly coat sheds very little but needs brushing several times a week and a professional clip about every two months. Copper toxicosis, an inherited liver disorder, is the breed's best-known health concern, so a veterinarian can advise on liver checks and diet. Dogs vary, so judge each Bedlington by its own behavior.
