A Chiweenie is a cross between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund, usually a miniature one, and it has been bred deliberately in North America since roughly the late 1990s. Because it is a mix rather than a standardized breed, looks vary widely. Many have a Dachshund's long back and short legs with a Chihuahua's large ears and rounded head, in coats that can be short, long or occasionally wiry and colors from fawn and black-and-tan to dapple.
Chiweenies are often bold, loyal and lively little dogs that attach strongly to their people and speak up about visitors, noises and anything else they find suspicious. Many are playful and affectionate at home but wary of strangers or rough handling. Their small size suits apartments, yet adopters should expect training patience, careful handling of the back and attention to dental care.
