The Hamiltonstovare is a Swedish scent hound created by Count Adolf Hamilton, founder of the Swedish Kennel Club, and first shown in 1886. It was made to trail hare and fox alone, giving tongue so hunters could follow. The medium-sized, athletic dog weighs roughly 50 to 60 pounds and wears a close-lying tricolor coat of black mantle, tan and white markings.
Many Hamiltonstovares are friendly and even-tempered, but the nose usually wins. In Virginia Beach, that means secure fencing, a solid leash habit on beach walks and trails, and patient, reward-based training. The breed is uncommon outside Scandinavia, so watch the listings on this page and look at similar hound breeds if none is listed right now. Dogs vary, and hound mixes may show similar habits.
