The Shar-Pei is a medium dog, usually 45 to 60 pounds, with deep wrinkles, a broad muzzle, small folded ears and a blue-black tongue. The name means "sand skin" in Chinese and refers to the harsh, short coat. The breed comes from southern China, where it guarded homes, and the AKC recognizes it as the Chinese Shar-Pei.
Many Shar-Peis are calm, clean and devoted to their families, though they're often aloof with strangers and picky about other dogs. Early socialization and steady, reward-based training help. In Richmond, that also means planning for the heat, learning to clean and dry skin folds, and finding a veterinarian who knows the breed's skin, eye and fever issues. Every dog varies, so judge the dog in front of you.
