Terrier is a type of dog, not a single breed. The name comes from the Latin word for earth, because these dogs were developed over several centuries to hunt rats and foxes, often by following them into burrows. Dozens of breeds carry the label, from tiny Yorkshire Terriers to the much larger Airedale, and adoption listings often use it for terrier-like dogs of mixed ancestry, such as Jack Russell, Rat, Cairn or Schnauzer mixes.
Most adoptable Terriers weigh about 10 to 35 pounds and have wiry or smooth coats and a lively, confident outlook. Many are loyal, affectionate and full of personality, though barking, digging, chasing small animals and a stubborn streak are common. Size, coat and energy depend on a dog's ancestry, so meeting the dog tells you more than the label. In Norfolk, plan on daily walks and secure fencing.
