A Malshi is a cross between a Maltese, the ancient Mediterranean lap dog, and a Shih Tzu, the palace companion developed in China. It is a designer mix rather than a breed with a standard, so its size and looks are estimates from the parents. Most Malshis are toy dogs of about 6 to 12 pounds with round dark eyes, drop ears, a plumed tail and a long, soft, low-shedding coat in white, cream or white with tan, gold or black patches.
Many Malshis are affectionate, playful and happiest close to their people, with modest exercise needs that suit apartments and quieter homes. Their care centers on that coat, which mats without frequent brushing and regular trims, along with daily tooth care and patient housetraining. Some inherit the Shih Tzu's shorter muzzle and the eye and breathing issues that can come with it.
