The Australian Kelpie was developed in the 1870s from Scottish working collies to move Merino sheep across hot, sprawling Australian stations. It's a lean, medium-sized dog of roughly 25 to 45 pounds with prick ears, a fox-like head and a short, weather-resisting double coat in black, red, blue, fawn or tan shades. That coat sheds moderately year-round, and more in spring and fall.
Kelpies are quick, loyal and devoted to their people, though often reserved with strangers. Working-line dogs tend to carry more drive than show-line dogs, and without a job a Kelpie may herd children, chase bikes or bark. In SLC they suit adopters who like daily trail miles and training, and who can keep up with a dog that never really clocks out.
