The Standard Schnauzer is the original of the three Schnauzer breeds, developed in southern Germany as a farm dog that caught rats, guarded the yard and rode along with carriages. Medium-sized and square-built, it has a wiry pepper-and-salt or black coat, bushy eyebrows and a bearded muzzle that gives it a serious look. The Miniature and Giant Schnauzers were both developed from it.
Many Standards are bright, spirited and loyal, with a watchful streak and a mind of their own. Some chase small animals or are choosy about other dogs. They need daily exercise, steady training and regular coat care, either hand-stripping or clipping every six to eight weeks. In San Antonio, that mix suits an adopter who is home often, enjoys training and wants a dog that stays close.
