The Rough Collie is the long-coated Collie, a Scottish herding dog refined into the elegant show dog Americans know from Lassie. Males run about 24 to 26 inches and females 22 to 24, usually 50 to 75 pounds, with a full mane, feathered legs and a long, tapered head. Colors include sable and white, tricolor, blue merle and white.
Many Collies are gentle, sensitive and devoted, though each dog varies. They learn fast with kind, reward-based training and tend to announce visitors. The main commitments are daily walks, steady brushing through heavy coat blows, and a veterinarian who knows about MDR1 drug sensitivity. Collies often live about 12 to 14 years, so it's a long relationship worth planning for.
