Bernese Mountain Dogs come from the farms of Switzerland's canton of Bern, where they pulled milk carts, drove cattle and guarded the farmyard. They're the only long-coated Swiss mountain dog, with a jet-black coat, rust markings and a white blaze and chest cross, and most adults weigh 70 to 115 pounds.
Berners are usually gentle, affectionate and eager to please, though some are reserved with strangers. Early training matters, since a pulling adult is hard to handle. Shedding is heavy and constant, so expect a regular brush and vacuum routine, and know that the breed's lifespan of roughly 7 to 10 years is shortened by cancer. Dogs vary, so a Berner's own personality matters more than the breed label.
