The Thai Ridgeback is a medium-sized primitive breed from eastern Thailand, where it hunted, escorted carts and guarded villages for centuries. The strip of hair along its back grows against the rest of the coat, which is short and smooth in red, black, blue or pale fawn. Weekly brushing is usually enough, though shedding continues year-round.
Many Thai Ridgebacks are loyal to their family, reserved with strangers and independent enough to decide whether a cue is worth following. They tend to suit experienced adopters who can offer an hour or more of daily exercise, early socialization and patient, reward-based training. Dogs vary, and a mix may look or act differently. The breed is rare in the US, so watch the listings on this page and look at similar breeds too.
