Dutch Shepherds began as all-purpose farm dogs in the Netherlands, herding sheep, keeping flocks out of crops and watching over farmyards. The breed has been defined by its brindle coat in gold or silver tones since 1914, and it comes in short-haired, long-haired and rough-haired varieties. Today it is best known as a police, military and sport dog, and it remains rare.
Many are loyal, alert and eager to work, with an independent streak from their farm heritage. They tend to be watchful with strangers and need early socialization. In Plano, that means a dog who enjoys training classes and sport as much as trail time. Most do best with experienced, active adopters who like training as a shared hobby, and temperament varies from dog to dog.
