Corgi is a shared name for two Welsh herding breeds, the Pembroke and the Cardigan, and shelters also use it for corgi mixes. Both are long, low cattle dogs with upright ears and a dense double coat. Pembrokes are usually red, sable or tricolor with a short or docked tail, while Cardigans are heavier, keep a long brushy tail and can be brindle or blue merle.
Most corgis are bright, affectionate and confident for their size. Their herding past often shows up as barking and nipping at moving heels, especially in young dogs, which matters around kids and bikes on busy trails and sidewalks. They shed heavily, love food and need daily exercise, but many make lively, devoted companions.
