The English Bulldog, listed by the AKC simply as the Bulldog, comes from England, where its ancestors were used in bull-baiting until the sport was outlawed in 1835. Over the following decades the dog was reshaped into a companion that kept the massive head, loose wrinkled skin and low, wide body but gained a much gentler disposition.
Most Bulldogs weigh 40 to 55 pounds and live about 7 to 10 years. Many are calm, affectionate and content with short walks and long naps, though some are stubborn or guard food and toys. The flat face brings trade-offs: breathing trouble, skin-fold infections and joint problems are common. Adopters do best with a vet who knows flat-faced dogs and a routine built around weight control and staying cool.
