The Collie grew out of Scottish sheep-herding dogs and was refined in Victorian Britain into the elegant dog most Americans know from Lassie. It comes in two varieties of one breed: the Rough Collie with a flowing mane and the Smooth Collie with a short, sleek coat. Both have a dense double coat, a long wedge-shaped head and expressive eyes, and most adults weigh 50 to 75 pounds.
Many Collies are gentle, sensitive and closely tuned to their families, with a long reputation for patience around children. Herding instincts can show up as barking, circling or nudging at running kids. In Midland, plan for heavy seasonal shedding, regular brushing and a vet who knows about the drug sensitivity common in the breed. Every Collie differs, so judge the dog in front of you.
