The Hamiltonstovare is a Swedish scent hound created by Count Adolf Hamilton, founder of the Swedish Kennel Club, and first shown in 1886. It was bred to trail hare and fox on its own and give tongue so hunters could follow. The tricolor coat, a black mantle with tan and white markings, is harsh and lies close to the body, and an adult usually stands 19 to 24 inches tall.
At home, many are friendly and even-tempered, but the nose usually wins over the owner's voice. In Houston, that means a secure fence, a long line on bayou trails, and training that stays short and rewarding. Dogs vary, so a Hamiltonstovare or hound mix may be calmer or more driven than the breed description suggests. The breed is uncommon in the US, so similar hound breeds and nearby cities are worth browsing here too.
