The Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle rather than a recognized breed, so the dogs you meet in Garland can look very different from one another. Weights run from about 15 pounds for minis to well over 80 for standards, and coats range from straight and shaggy to tight curls. The cross grew popular in the 1990s as a friendly family companion, and some work as therapy dogs.
Most carry the Golden's sociable warmth and the Poodle's quick mind, so they enjoy training and company. They also need daily exercise, regular brushing and professional grooming, since waves and curls mat easily. Shedding varies, and none is guaranteed hypoallergenic. In a city of backyards and creekside trails like Garland, a Goldendoodle usually does best with an owner who is home often and likes being outdoors.
