Dutch Shepherds began as all-purpose farm dogs in the Netherlands, herding sheep, keeping flocks out of crops and watching over farmyards. The brindle coat, in gold or silver tones, comes in short, long and rough-haired varieties. Police, military and sport work made the breed known, but it's still rare and sits in the AKC's Miscellaneous Class.
In Garland, the woolly double coat sheds heavily during seasonal blowouts, so a good brush and a vacuum become household tools. Dutch Shepherds are watchful with strangers, which makes early socialization important around busy sidewalks and trailheads. Expect a thinking dog that wants a job. Energy and temperament still vary from dog to dog, so spend time getting to know the one you're considering.
