The Carolina Dog is a lean, medium-sized dog with tall pointed ears, a fishhook tail and a ginger or buff coat, though black, black-and-tan and piebald dogs turn up too. Nicknamed the American Dingo, the type comes from free-ranging dogs of the Southeastern pine forests and swamps, brought to wider attention by biologist I. Lehr Brisbin in the 1970s. Despite the nickname, DNA work shows no descent from the Australian dingo.
Carolina Dogs tend to be pack-minded and closely bonded to their families while staying reserved with strangers. They're clever and resourceful, which often means digging and fence testing. In Garland, that makes a secure yard and a steady routine more important than square footage. Many shelter dogs labeled Carolina Dog are identified by appearance, so a dog's behavior matters more than the label.
