The Greyhound is an ancient sighthound type refined in England to chase game by sight. A deep chest, long legs and a flexible back let it pass 40 miles per hour, yet most pet Greyhounds in the US are retired racers, usually two to five years old, and many have never lived in a house. Expect a learning curve with stairs, glass doors and household noise.
Once settled, they're gentle, quiet and affectionate, with a short coat that sheds lightly. In El Paso that coat matters in both directions: there's little fat to hold warmth on a freezing night and little protection from a 100-degree June afternoon. Dogs vary, and prey drive in particular differs from one Greyhound to the next, so plan on a leash outdoors and careful introductions to cats and small dogs.
