Dachshund means "badger dog" in German, and the breed was built to follow quarry underground. That history explains the long body, short legs, deep chest and surprisingly loud bark. Dachshunds come in standard and miniature sizes and in smooth, longhaired and wirehaired coats, so two adopters can end up with very different-looking dogs.
Many are curious, brave and devoted, with a stubborn streak and a taste for digging and chasing. In El Paso, that instinct meets hard, dry ground and desert-edge yards, so a secure fence and a designated dig spot go a long way. Their shape makes disc disease the main health concern, so keeping a Dachshund lean and limiting jumping matters. Patience with house-training usually pays off.
