In the United States, the Cocker Spaniel is the American Cocker, the smallest dog in the AKC Sporting Group. Its spaniel ancestors flushed woodcock for English hunters, which is where the name comes from. The American version has a rounded head, large dark eyes, a short square muzzle and a long, silky coat in black, solid colors or parti-colors.
Many Cockers are gentle, cheerful and affectionate, though every dog varies. The coat needs regular brushing and professional trims, and the long ears need weekly checks. In El Paso, that feathered coat also picks up dust and desert grit, so a quick brush and ear wipe after outings becomes part of the routine. Adopters who enjoy grooming and daily walks often find a devoted housemate.
