The Standard Schnauzer is the original of the three Schnauzer breeds. It began as a versatile farm dog in southern Germany, catching rats, guarding the yard and trotting alongside carriages. The bristly beard, arched eyebrows and harsh, wiry coat in pepper and salt or solid black give it a serious expression.
Many Standards are clever, spirited and loyal, watchful with strangers and playful with their families. They're medium-sized and sturdy, usually 30 to 50 pounds, and they need daily exercise, consistent training and regular coat care. The coat sheds very little, but it needs routine grooming. Dogs vary, so a Standard's own personality and energy matter more than any breed description.
