Papillons are small spaniels with large, fringed, upright ears that give the breed its butterfly look. Toy spaniels like them appear in European paintings from the 1500s, and the breed developed in France and Belgium. Drop-eared dogs, called Phalènes, belong to the same breed. The American Kennel Club recognized the Papillon in 1935 and places it in the Toy Group.
A Papillon weighs about 5 to 10 pounds but is sturdier and more athletic than it looks, with a long, silky coat that's mostly white with patches of color. Many are bright, curious and friendly, and they shine at agility and trick training. In Dallas, that energy and a tendency to bark suit a household where someone is around to play, train and keep a small dog out of the midday heat. Dogs vary, so each Papillon's personality may differ.
