The Bedlington Terrier looks like a lamb, with a pear-shaped head, woolly topknot and arched back, but it's a terrier from the mining country around Bedlington, Northumberland, in England. Miners valued it for catching vermin and rabbits, and likely Whippet ancestry gave it real speed. In Nashville, that history shows up on walks, when a squirrel or rabbit beside a greenway can set off a sprint.
Most Bedlingtons are gentle, affectionate housemates, calm indoors and happy to stay close to their people. The crisp, curly coat sheds very little but needs regular brushing and professional clipping. The breed also carries an inherited liver disorder called copper toxicosis, so a veterinarian can advise on testing and diet. As with any breed, energy and temperament vary from dog to dog.
