The Appenzell Mountain Dog, or Appenzeller Sennenhund, is one of four tricolor Swiss mountain dog breeds. It comes from the Appenzell region of northeastern Switzerland, where it drove cattle, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. Medium-sized and muscular at roughly 48 to 70 pounds, it has a short, dense double coat in black or brown with white and rust markings, and a tail that curls over its back.
Appenzellers tend to be lively, watchful and reserved with strangers, and devoted to their own people. They were bred to work all day, so a Nashville home with time for long walks, training and a yard usually suits them best. The breed is uncommon in the US, and dogs vary, so plan around the needs of the particular dog rather than the breed's reputation.
