The Maltese is an ancient Mediterranean lap-dog type that was largely standardized in Victorian Britain. It's a fine-boned toy dog, usually four to eight pounds, wearing a floor-length, silky white coat with no undercoat. That coat sheds very little, but it mats quickly unless it's brushed often or kept in a short puppy cut, which many pet owners prefer.
Many Maltese are gentle, affectionate and surprisingly fearless, and they often stay playful well into old age. In a humid, rainy place like Knoxville, a trimmed coat is easier to keep dry and tangle-free. They're easy to carry but easy to injure, so they suit careful adults or calm older children. Plan on regular grooming, daily tooth care, patient housetraining and a dog that wants company.
